CA ARCserve Backup uses Microsoft’s Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) and Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) technologies to perform granular e-mail backups and restores.
Microsoft Exchange versions 2007 and 2010 do not include these technologies by default. The Exchange Administrator will need to download the MAPI-CDO package from www.Microsoft.com and install it on the Exchange servers that you will be protecting.
If the MAPI-CDO package is installed before the CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Exchange is installed, ARCserve will detect the presence of the required binaries and automatically prepare the Exchange server for granular backups and restores during the Agent Installation.
If the MAPI-CDO package is installed after the CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Exchange is installed, please perform the following steps to enable granular backups and restores:
-
Make sure that no one is using the CA ARCserve Management Console to perform any operations (i.e. browse, backup, restore, etc.) on the Exchange Server.
-
Login to the Microsoft Exchange Server
- Stop the CA ARCserve Universal Agent Service.
-
Open a command-line window, and go to the CA ARCserve Exchange Agent’s home directory
-
Under the “DocumentLevel” subdirectory, execute the following command
ExchDocWrapper.exe –regServer
- This command verifies the existence of the MAPI-CDO package and registers the Document-Level functionality.
- Start the CA ARCserve Universal Agent service
You will now be able to perform document-level backups of your Microsoft Exchange servers.

Hi David,
We definitely are monitoring the feeds. I’m going to have the appropriate person reach out and work with you to resolve this problem.

I followed the steps from the post. We are using Exchange 2007 SP3. I can only still see the option to back up the Database Level. Under the Backup Agent Admin, I do see settings for the Docunment Level, however the option within the source screen in unavailable.
I’m not sure any one is still monitoring this feed, if HELP!!
We use Arcserve 5 years agoo.Very simple and usefull backup programs.I advice to everyone…
I have Exchange 2003 running on Windows 2003 Std. The Exchnage database level gives me a throughput of 1300 MB/Min and the document level only runs for 50 MB/Min tried several tweaks with tech support such as setting up Number of thread – 4 and Maximum backup Size – 256 MB, disabled Antivirus but no luck. The document level backup still sucks. Any suggestions?
I have Exchange 2010 with Service 2, running on Windows 2008 SP2 64 Bit. If I try to backup all of the mailboxes via Document Level, I receive a E8535 error. If I only backup about 10 mailboxes at a time, all seems to be well. What gives?
Thanks.
Are there any plans to support single pass backups of Exchange (SQL too)? Backup Exec 2010 has this feature and it really seems like a must have. In a single pass ARCserve could backup Exchange and allow us to to database and or document level restore. And if the Exchange server is a VM, the same would hold true if performing a VDDK backup of the server.
Hey – great suggestion, Mike! That seems to have been the issue. I changed the Agent thread count from the default (24) to 6 and the job is now running without error! You rock …
@ Ed
Hello Ed – The problem you are having with the AE9609 error backing up Exchange 2010 Document Level has been resolved several times by decreasing the maximum number of threads used by the agent.
You must change the ARCserve Backup Agent config settings on the ARCserve Backup Agent Admin on the Exchange Server.
1. Open the Backup Agent Admin [Start-Programs-CA - ARCserve Backup - Backup Agent Admin]
2. Switch to the Agent for Microsoft Exchange [In the drop down on the right hand side change from Client Agent for Windows to Agent for Micorosft Exchange]
3. Open configuration tabs [click on the "hammer and screwdriver" button]
4. Click on the Document Level agent tab
5. Set the ‘Maximum Number of Threads’ value to either ’4′ or ’6′ [both settings have solved this problem]
6. Save the changes. Close the configuration tabs.
7. Re-start the Universal agent service: Open the service window by clicking on the ’2 gears button’ on the far left side of the Backup Agent Admin window
8. Stop, then Start the service using the ‘stop’ and ‘play’ buttons
9. Close the service window
10. Close the Backup Agent Admin Window
Repeat the backup test.
If this does not solve the problem please open a support case with ARCserve Technical Support
I recently upgrade to Exch 2010 SP1 and now, when I do DOC-level backups from ARCserve R15, I get the following errors and the job fails:
—-
AM AE9609 A necessary Exchange service is not running. Please start the related service on the Exchange server manually.
—-
Is this a problem brought on by SP1 and, if so, any idea how to get around it or when a fix might be available?
Hello Janet,
I’m glad the post helped. Thanks for the feedback!
Take care,
Trevor
Thanks alot for your help. Method 1 did the job for me as well. Wish I had found this blog sooner. Wasted over a week looking for the problem!
Hello John,
Are you able to expand the Document Level Object at all for your Exchange Server? If you try and nothing is listed underneath, there are a couple things to check…
1. Verify the Security Account of the Exchange Agent itself
a. The Doc-Level Object may have the wrong account defined in its security, even if the parent Server object is registered with the DOMAIN Admin Account.
b. In any case, verify the correct security at the Doc-Level object, even if you applied the correct security to the parent object.
2. Doc Level Object Expands and Agent keeps asking for a login
a. Try the steps located in the following KB Article:
b. I implemented Method 1 when I had a problem with Doc-Level Backups and it resolved my problems.
If none of these steps help you, please contact our Tech Support Team. They are very skilled, and if the situation requires it, you can let them access your desktop through our Support Utilities.
Best Regards,
Trevor
I have followed the above steps in Exchange 2007, both before installation and after installation of MAPI-CDO. However, I still not able to use Document Level backup, which does not provide any option to choose for document level backup in the “Backup View”, as is brick level backup in pre r12 verison. I’m using CCR mode of Exchange 2007 and try the document level in both Active and Passive cluster but still no luck. Could you give me some hints?
Hello Kai and William,
Thank you for taking the time to read my blog entry. Here are my responses to your questions…
@Kai – The error details seem to indicate a permissions problem retrieving the AD Objects. Please verify the security permissions of the user that you used to install the Exchange Agent. If you still have problems after verifying your security permissions, please contact our Support Specialists, at +1 800 225-5224, and they can help you further.
@William – The process is nearly identical except that Exchange 2003 already has the MAPI and CDO binaries already. You should be able to run successful document-level backups already.
Regards,
Trevor
Still problems connecting document level, allthought MAPI-CDO is installed .
Any ideas ?

Does this apply to Exchange 2003? If not what process is required to enable Document-Level backups in Exchange.

William.
